Tracy Whitaker, LCSW, RPT-S, Heart Tree Art's clinical director, has 15 years of experience healing children, adolescents and adults in outpatient, in-home, residential and hospital settings. Prior to opening Heart Tree Arts, she was on faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia. She taught family therapy and supervised psychology interns, social work interns, and physicians in family therapy clinic as they completed their training at Virginia Treatment Center for Children. Ms. Whitaker also served as an outpatient clinician at Virginia Treatment Center for Children. Ms. Whitaker completed Old Dominion University's Play Therapy Program. She began her exploration into art as medicine through Appalachian State University's Expressive Arts Therapy Certificate.
Ms. Whitaker holds a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. She took her Masters of Social Work at Radford University in Radford, Virginia and received the Waldron Scholarship. Ms. Whitaker holds the highest credential offered by the Association for Play Therapy as a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers. Ms Whitaker's Expressive Arts Therapy work through Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, has led her to develop a number of workshops for women around the theme of the "Creative Feminine." Ms. Whitaker plans to continue to grow Heart Tree Arts and earn the credential of Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (REAT).
